General Information

General Information (USC)

The tradition of outstanding interscholastic programming has a long history in the Upper St.U logo Clair School District. The district’s interscholastic program fields more competitive teams than any other school district in the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA). The membership of PIAA consists of 1,457 schools of which 772 are senior high schools and 685 are junior high/middle schools. More than 320,000 students participate in interscholastic athletics at all levels of competition (varsity, junior varsity or otherwise) under PIAA jurisdiction, which placed Pennsylvania sixth among the states in the nation for 2008-2009.

Interscholastic programming begins at Fort Couch Middle School at seventh grade and continues through grades 9 to 12 at Upper St. Clair High School.
As a participating member of the PIAA, the Upper St. Clair School District interscholastic program’s three major goals are:

1.      emphasize the educational values of interscholastic athletics,

2.      promote safe and sportsmanlike competition, and

3.      abide by uniform standards for all interscholastic levels of competition.

Athletic opportunities for students below seventh grade are offered through the Township of Upper St. Clair’s Department of Recreation and Leisure Services in conjunction with the Upper St. Clair Athletic Association.  The Department also provides athletic opportunities for students in grades 7 to 12. Additional information about this programming can be obtained at www.livesmarteplaysmarter.org, or www.twpusc.org and then consulting the Department of Recreation and Leisure Services.

The USC High School sports roster includes a total of 15 different sports programs with one co-educational, 12 male and 11 female programs.
