USC Boys Golf "Birdies for a Cause" Fundraiser

Updated on 09/12/2023

The time of the year for the Upper St. Clair Boys Golf "Birdies for a Cause" is approaching. Birdies for a Cause has been a USC Boys Golf Team tradition since 2011. The purpose of this annual project is to raise money and awareness for a specific charity through donations or pledges for every birdie earned by the JV and Varsity golf team members through their 2023 competitive season. The USC Boys Golf Team has raised over $75,000 in support of local Pittsburgh charities since 2011.

This year, the team has selected the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and the Kids for Wish Kids program, as their charity. The team understands and supports the valuable work done by Make-A-Wish and is especially connected to raising money to support the Make-A-Wish mission of creating life-changing wishes for children, aged 2 ½ to 18, living with critical illnesses. Since 2020, the USC Boys Golf Team has raised enough to grant four wishes for local children with critical illnesses.

The Birdies for a Cause drive is linked to the boys’ golf efforts - the more birdies they score, the more $$ they raise for Make-A-Wish!  We have continuing support here in the USC community, we hope to broaden the reach of our fundraising to the entirety of the Pittsburgh region.  We welcome you to contribute online or seek out your USC Boys Golf Team Member to donate in person; we thank you in advance for your support! Please see the link below for donation information.

Joon Commits to Play Collegiate Golf at Denison University

Updated on 08/28/2023

Neil was just 3 years old when he first picked up a golf club. From the time he went out for his first round, he knew this sport was something special and his passion continued to grow as he watched players like Tiger Woods growing up.

At the age of 7 Neil started playing competitively and quickly realized that this was something he wanted to pursue more seriously. Over the last few years Neil and his family have traveled to a number of states and tournaments to showcase his skills, play at a more competitive level and to open up the door to playing at the collegiate level.

More recently, at the Penn State AJGA Junior qualifier something clicked when Neil shot one under, scoring a fantastic 71 (-1/71) to become medalist. This gave him the opportunity to play against some of the best players in the world with college coaches watching. That was the day he received his first offer, and a day he will remember for the rest of his life.  But in August of 2023 came the next defining moment of Neil’s growing golf career when Coach Grogan from Denison University in Granville Ohio offered him a spot on her team roster.

“Denison was always at the top of my list. The combination of academic rigor and the opportunity to win a national championship was exactly what I was looking for in a college. Coach Grogan has been nothing short of amazing throughout this process and has given me the opportunity of a lifetime.  I am beyond excited to play for Denison and am looking forward to contributing toward my team’s success. Playing for one of the best Division III programs in the country gives me the chance to showcase my skills at every tournament and prove my potential all while earning an incredible degree from an outstanding college,” Said Joon.

Other notable accolades Neil has earned over last year are

West Penn Boys Championship 2022 champion

19th place PIAA state championship 2022

Hurricane Junior open Pittsburgh 2023 champion;

3rd place Hurricane Junior Summer Open 2023

7th place West Penn Junior Championship 2023

Williamson Cup Team selection and Medalist at AJGA Junior at Penn State Qualifier

The USC Boys golf season is currently underway with a team of strong players where Neil is one of the captains and a lead scorer.
